Vegetable Theme Park

July 8th, 2008 Posted in superteam

The Super Team has been learning about food lately. Jake is working with the folks at St. David’s to break out of his Cheerios rut. Maddie is growing a fabulous garden. Suz and Jim (and to a lesser degree the kids) have joined a CSA farm.

The CSA gig is very cool. Our friends Jamie and Tammy suggested we try Harmony Valley which they had been very happy with. Every other Thursday you get a box of fresh vegetables that come from your farm. Each box is an adventure–we’ve easily doubled or tripled the numbers of vegetables in our repertoire–from Ramp to Radishes we’ve given everything a shot. Some very tasty surprises!

Suz says its like living in a vegetable theme park!

The pictures below are Maddie with some of her strawberry harvest and a sample box from earlier this Spring.

Every other Thursday it’s like Christmas — veggie style. A big box of surprises, many tasty, and some, it must be admitted, the metaphorical box of underwear of vegetables (kale, I’m looking at you). The CSA has been seriously awesome.

    Go Maddie Go!

I got hooked on kale last year with my now-CSA farmer. you have to cook it pretty well with some aromatics, like this: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_36674,00.html
Skip the cheese and it’s still delicious, I think. Still, kale is probably not very kid-licious.

For me, baby turnips — not so much. They’re like a soft radish. Not interesting enough for me.
